CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO STOP ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, AND RETURN POWER TO THE STATES
Sound farfetched? Well. maybe not. You see, our founding fathers were very scared of a Central Government not responding to the people. So in their infinite wisdom, they left the States the power to go around the Federal Government and amend the Constitution without any federal involvement.
Article V
The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress; provided that no amendment which may be made prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any manner affect the first and fourth clauses in the ninth section of the first article; and that no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate.
We have been approached about working on this very thing. Basically it would mean that we would have State Legislatures call for a Constitutional Convention and leave the Federal Government completely out of it. Some have said that because of party politics that the States would not do it, and grant you, it has never been done. But imagine if States could bar the Government from pushing unfunded mandates onto the States? Or forcing the Federal Government to fully refund States for the cost of illegal immigration? Just this year alone States have introduced 500 bills dealing with illegal immigration, so they obviously are looking at solutions and this may be one of the best solutions available to States.
While I understand this would be a major undertaking to pull off, I am of the opinion that most State Legislators are as fed up with Washington as I am.
Over the past few decades, Washington has assumed much more power than our founding fathers intended them to have. But our founding fathers seemed to have predicted this would happen and they left us with the tools to rein them in. That leaves it up to us, the people of this great Nation to take back control of our Country. And if it takes something extreme, then so be it. Whatever it takes to secure our borders, enforce our laws, and return the power to the people.
